5 New Year’s Resolutions for Family Caregivers

Ariene Malicdem • Jan 23, 2023

Being a family caregiver can be taxing, both physically and emotionally. Therefore, setting resolutions and taking time to care for yourself is crucial. By becoming the best version of yourself, you will be more present and available to assist your loved ones.

Here are five New Year’s resolutions for family caregivers that will help you stay healthy, happy, and productive in 2023.

1. Prioritize Self-Care

Being a caregiver is an all-consuming job, and finding time for yourself each week is essential. Whether it’s getting coffee with a friend or going for a massage, carve out at least one hour of the week that is just for you.

Some ways that you can prioritize self-care include:

  • Taking a vacation or weekend getaway
  • Practicing gratitude every day
  • Pursuing a hobby or creative outlet
  • Getting enough sleep each night
  • Starting a workout routine

No matter which activity you choose, make sure it’s something you genuinely enjoy so you can relieve stress.

2. Ask for Help When Needed

Trying to do everything on your own isn’t sustainable or healthy. Feeling overworked can lead to feelings of guilt, frustration, and helplessness. That’s why it’s important to learn how to ask for help when needed.

Thankfully, plenty of resources are available that offer assistance, like home care services. In addition, having a professional caregiver provide respite care can give you a much-needed break while guaranteeing that your loved one is being taken care of.

Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help when needed. It can make all the difference and re-establish your relationship with your loved one as a positive and rewarding one.

3. Stay Connected to Friends and Loved Ones

Social connections are imperative, especially when caring for a loved one. But unfortunately, those who are constantly busy may not have much contact with their peers or family outside their home environment.

Make sure to schedule regular check-ins with friends and family, so you don’t feel isolated or overwhelmed by your caregiving demands. Additionally, look into support groups for caregivers to connect with others who understand what you’re going through. Having peers who recognize your unique circumstances can provide an outlet for you to express your feelings and frustrations.

4. Take Time to Reflect

Take some time each week to reflect on how things are going and what areas of your life need improvement. This will keep things in perspective and remind you what’s most important in life.

Try journaling or starting a blog to document your journey as a family caregiver. This can be especially useful if you need to look back and remember how far you have come. When reflecting, be honest with yourself about what areas need improvement so you can effectively move forward.

5. Set Achievable Goals & Celebrate Wins

Caring for an aging relative or loved one often involves quite a few obstacles along the way. However, don’t forget to celebrate the small victories. Setting achievable goals—whether big or small—provides something concrete to strive towards daily. Plus, making progress in other areas of your life will offer a much-needed sense of accomplishment.

Create smaller actionable steps so you can reflect on your progress without feeling overwhelmed by the journey ahead. In addition, you will get to celebrate each small win and stay motivated and optimistic.
