What It Means to Be a Professional Caregiver

Ariene Malicdem • Oct 07, 2022

Choosing to work as a professional caregiver often means you are choosing a job that is physically demanding. Yet, it is also a job that is extremely rewarding. Many professional caregivers experience pride and joy in their role as a caregiver, despite the negative connotations associated with the job. Professional caregivers play an integral role in helping the senior population. Without caregivers, many seniors would continue to suffer silently at home.

Professional caregivers aren’t medical or nursing experts, but rather helpers and assistants to clients needing some support at home. Here is a little more about what it means to be a professional caregiver.

Professional Caregivers Offer Companionship

One of the biggest components of being a professional caregiver is companionship. Many obstacles prohibit some seniors from cultivating healthy relationships, such as chronic illnesses, decreased mobility, cognitive decline, and limited family availability. Professional caregivers often fill that social and emotional void. Whether it’s playing a game or conversing over a cup of coffee, professional caregivers strive to form a companionship with their clients.

Professional Caregivers Assist with Day-to-Day Activities

Along with providing companionship, being a professional caregiver also means assisting with day-to-day activities. They can help with meal planning and preparation, ensuring their clients have healthy meals available throughout the week. They may assist with light housekeeping tasks, such as laundry or dusting hard-to-reach places. Some clients need assistance running errands or may need to be escorted to a doctor’s appointment. Others may need help safely taking a shower or getting dressed. Professional caregivers can assist with these daily tasks, all while helping their clients to remain as active as possible.

Professional Caregivers Monitor for Safety

Being a professional caregiver also means monitoring for safety. Professional caregivers are trained to look for unsafe living conditions, such as loose floorboards, cluttered pathways, and other hazards that increase a senior’s risk for falls. They can help their clients address such issues and inform families if repairs are needed. Professional caregivers are also trained in medication management. They can ensure that their clients are taking their medications as prescribed and remind them to take certain medications during their visits.

Professional Caregivers are an Extension of the Family

In addition to enhancing the lives of seniors, being a professional caregiver often means becoming like another member of the family. Families that live near their aging loved ones may struggle to find balance in their personal life. Those that live far away may constantly worry about their aging loved ones living alone. Professional caregivers can give families peace of mind, as well as help families find more balance in their lives. Knowing that their loved one is in capable hands means that families can attend to their own needs without feeling guilty about leaving their loved one all alone. Many seniors who have a professional caregiver often report that their caregiver is like another member of their family.
